The purpose of this paper is to suggest a fun way to enjoy reading and consequently enhance EFL college-level students’ reading abilities with the use of transmedia. In order to do this, three media were used in this case study: an American television series, two printed Bibles, and two articles about the same biblical topic from the internet.
Four college students participated: three were non-English majors and one was an English major. Two tests were administered: a content recall test and a vocabulary meaning recall test. One interview was also conducted with four questions (about character, media, the language test and reading). The results in the written tests showed all the participants were excellent in the content test thanks to the use of transmedia.
However, the use of transmedia did not seem to have the same effect in the language test. The interview showed different results from those of the written tests. Three participants who received low scores mentioned that they were quite acquainted with many words, even though they received poor grades in the language test. Lastly, regarding reading: all the participants said they came to be fond of reading after they used transmedia in reading the Bible stories. |
