The establishment of university level education through cyber space in Korea began in 2001. Since then, more and more colleges have substituted their regular off-line classes with Internet mediated instruction. The reason behind adopting such an education system was, without doubt, in training high-quality human resources and cultivating global leaders through the most advanced yet inexpensive technology. However, the question remains as to whether such economizing of education costs and promotion of convenience, do not, in fact, hinder the effectiveness of education itself. Thus this study attempts to investigate the effectiveness of teaching English via the Internet by evaluating the change in general proficiency level of students participating in a web-based course. The material for the course was built on the movie Notting Hill on the basis of previous research results that maximum teaching effectiveness can be achieved by using movies as instructional materials. |
