An Alternative Method for Vocabulary Learning Using Quizlet
Yoon jung Cha, Hea Suk Kim
Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate whether mobile-based vocabulary learning can be replaced by a typical form of paper-based vocabulary learning for Korean EFL students in the university setting. 81 university students divided into two groups representing two different majors participated in the research. At the beginning of the research, the two groups respectively learned vocabulary by two different modes, worksheets versus mobile-based study. After the mid-term exam, those who had learned vocabulary with worksheets then used the mobile-based method, and vice versa. Eventually, all the participants studied words both with worksheets and through mobile vocabulary learning modes. For mobile-based vocabulary learning, Quizlet, the mobile app was used to provide vocabulary lists for the participants. Pre- and postvocabulary tests, a questionnaire were administered. Interviews were also conducted to explore the participants’ perspectives and preferences towards usage of the two different modes. Results revealed a positive effect of practicing vocabulary within the groups while no significant differences were found between the two groups after experiencing the two modes. Participants demonstrated various attitudes and perspectives regardless of the two different modes used for learning vocabulary. Pedagogical implications were drawn based on the results found in the research.
