This paper will discuss course design using the film adaptation of the novel Way of the Peaceful Warrior (Millman, 1980) in conjunction with the novel itself in a reading class designed for undergraduate students in their third or fourth year of study in English at a university in Seoul. The general purpose of the course was to help students improve their ability to communicate in English. Use of the film in this class was intended to help students to discuss cultural, philosophical, and English language concepts raised in the novel upon which the film was based. The rationale of the course and the design of the content will be discussed first. The material was presented in English via reading, film, lecture, and discussion. The teaching method was based on the idea that an emphasis should be placed on fostering a student-centered learning environment in which students can best develop their communicative proficiency in English by participating in a variety of activities including those which are self-directed, interactive, and of higher-order than passively listening to a lecture, memorizing information, and recapitulating that information in examinations. Students were asked to discuss their findings, and to advance and support arguments in spoken and written form. |
