Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to investigate to how mobile chatting affects Korean college student’s amount of chatting and richness of vocabulary, and to how the students use and respond to mobile chatting as a medium of CMC, compared to the use of chatting via a desk-top computer. Twelve college students participating in this experiment were required to use both mobile chatting and desk-top chatting for 6 weeks while doing given tasks as scheduled. The current study uses c-unit-turn-taking ratio, type-token ratio, and a survey containing a 5-point Likert scale and open ended questions. The major findings of the study are as follows. Firstly, the number of c-units per turn-taking during mobile chatting was significantly higher than during desk-top computer chatting. Secondly, no significant difference in the vocabulary richness between mobile chatting and desk-top computer chatting was found. Lastly, the results of a survey showed that the places for mobile chatting vary from school, to home, between-classes, and on-the-move while the place for desk-top computer chatting was limited to only the school and home. In addition, general convenience of use was not significantly different between mobile-chatting and desk-top-computer-chatting. However, immediate access to mobile chatting was significantly better than desk-top-computer-chatting. |
