Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to find any features of markedness in informal English speech. The data is chosen from the movie character Sandy in Along Came Polly. Two native speakers of English pointed out any expressions which may sound unusual or more informal in Sandy’s speech. The result shows that markedness is caused by six factors: 1) address terms, 2) responsive expressions, 3) greetings, 4) deleted structures, 5) single words, and 6) word combinations. Out of the total 63 marked expressions, only 15 cases (24%) are related to the first four factors, and the other 48 cases (76%) are directly connected to either single words or word combinations. Furthermore, markedness in 5) and 6) can be attributed to either in-group slang words or vulgar expressions. Concerning the single words, 62% belong to in-group slang words and 38% vulgar expressions. Most importantly, word combinations are found to be the greatest source of markedness, being responsible for the 51% of the total of 63 marked expressions. Unlike single words, marked word combinations use in-group slang words much more frequently (81%) than the vulgar expressions (19%). Korean colleges should teach pragmatic features of marked expressions to help students carry out successful conversations.
