Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to find what constitutes English reading classes in Korean high school for improving communicative skills and how Korean high school students experience post-reading communicative activities by using the COLT (Communicative Orientation of Language Teaching) class observation scheme. To this end, a COLT observation scheme is used to draw a picture of how groups are organized, who initiates and sustains the communication and other communicative elements by counting each event belonging to the prescribed communicative categories in English reading classes. Two high school English extensive reading classes are selected because the classes employed post-reading communicative activities, and they appeared in the EBS Best English Teacher Programs. The result of the study showed that in these classes, both students and teachers communicated more naturally and functionally in English. Students initiated communication, extended the talks and sustained the topic under discussion based on the stories they read together.
They could make a practical application of what they read and did through the activities during classes. It is expected that more English classroom observations can be conducted in follow-up studies to discover which factors express ideal communicative purposes in English reading classes |
