Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out how to improve the reading comprehension skills of freshmen at university or college. Several possibilities are considered such as the importance of vocabulary knowledge, the use of multimedia for screen English, and improving abilities of students to recognize key words, topic sentences, paragraph patterns, and infer main ideas. Traditionally, English novels, essays, or edited reading materials from Time or Newsweek have been used as reading textbooks. However, high-tech multimedia has developed so much that we can instruct students in reading comprehension skills by using innovative methods on DVDs or CD-ROMs. A more effective teaching methodology is to use the scripts of popular movies as the reading comprehension text as well as actually watching the movie.
