Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore ways to implement English musicals in English classes and to examine their educational effects on 10th graders at a vocational high school in Gyeonggi Province. The study investigated the changes of the participants’ affective aspects toward English, their career ambitions and listening skills. To collect the data, the researchers surveyed 104 students before and after the musical performances. Two professional musical actors, as team-teachers, were involved in the classes with the researchers teaching 34 lessons (twice a week) for 17 weeks. The participants were expected to memorize the English songs and the musical scripts. Based on an analysis of the data, the results are as follows. First, participants revealed their positive feelings toward English through post-individual questionnaires at the end of the semester. Second, more than one third of the participants were considering a musical-related occupation for their future career. Finally, the English listening ability of the students performing their musicals with the English script was better than that of those performing with the Korean one. Implementing classroom English musicals was challenging but worth doing. It brought drastic changes among passive participants, enabling them to express their emotions positively and bringing linguistic improvements.
