Initial Formulaic Sequence Approach for EFL Learners: Based on Film Corpus-Based Patterns
Sungran Koh
Abstract
Much research has been conducted to enhance EFL learners’ communicative language ability, but it is difficult for many teachers to ascertain effective methods to do this. This study makes an attempt to investigate the effectiveness of an initial formulaic sequence drill through film corpus-based activities for EFL learners. To do this, as a first step, the script of the film Parasite (Bong, 2019) was collected and analyzed in twenty initial formulaic sequences. Then, as a pre-test, the EFL learners were asked to make twenty questionnaires with initial formulaic sequences which translate Korean sentences into English. Then, after they were trained to practice the initial formulaic sequence patterns repetitively for two months, they were asked to take a mid-test. As a final step, they took a post-test after another two months’ training. The result shows the overall score was enhanced significantly from pre-test and post-test (pre-test: M = 15.45, SD = 7.17; post-test: M = 24.7, SD = 7.66). It can be demonstrated that the initial formulaic sequence through film corpus-based activities positively affects the ability to improve communicative language with linguistic patterns. This study suggests the efficacy of the Initial Formulaic Sequence Approach (IFSA) for teaching spoken English to EFL learners.
