The purpose of this paper is to observe the role of word combinations in communication and to suggest activities to memorize them. In recent years, the importance of recognizing word combinations and the necessity to teach them in the classroom has increased. Lewis (1997, 2000) presented word combinations with noticing activities; however, these activities were insufficient for language learners to understand and memorize the word combinations. This paper presents a three-fold activity. In the first stage, learners practice how to distinguish both idiomatic word combinations and free word combinations which are based on syntactic patterns but later turn into idiomatic expressions (Peters, 1983). In the second stage, learners analyze conversations in the American TV series Shameless (Abbott & Mylod, 2011) in order to understand the roles of both types of word combinations. In the third stage, learners practice recognizing these two types of word combinations through watching the scenes. In order for learners to participate in the activity without difficulty, the definition and scope of word combinations has been simplified. The experiment determining the effect of the activity in this paper has not been administered, but activities have been constructed based on positive feedback from students in the EFL classroom. |
